Israel Katz: Hezbollah leader "is playing with fire" - 1

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a sharp warning that “Hezbollah“ is pushing Lebanon towards a catastrophic scenario, after the leader of the pro-Iranian movement Naim Qassem declared himself against direct negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv, reports Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.

“Naim Qassem is playing with fire, and this fire will burn not only “Hezbollah“, but also all of Lebanon. If the Lebanese government continues to hide behind the terrorist organization, a fire will break out that will burn down the Lebanese cedars“, Katz told the UN special envoy to Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasshard, according to a statement from his office.

Israel and Lebanon have already held two rounds of ambassadorial-level talks in Washington over the war that Lebanon was embroiled in on March 2 after Hezbollah fired on Israel in support of Iran.

Following these talks, US President Donald Trump announced a ten-day ceasefire that took effect on April 17, which was later extended by another three weeks after the second round of diplomatic contacts.

Katz's harsh words came after the Hezbollah leader described the Israeli-Lebanese talks as a "dangerous mistake."

The Israeli minister also attacked Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, saying he was "playing with the future of Lebanon."

Katz stressed that Israel would not accept a permanent ceasefire, while attacks on Israeli forces and settlements in the northern part of the country continue.

He again urged the Lebanese authorities to proceed with the disarmament of “Hezbollah“, first in the area south of the Litani River to the Blue Line, and subsequently throughout the territory of Lebanon.
