Myanmar anti-junta resistance holds strategic town - 1

A resistance movement fighting Myanmar's ruling military said it had held off a push by forces yesterday of the junta to regain control of the strategic town of Myawadi on the border with Thailand, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

The agency recalls that last week opponents of the junta led by the rebel group Karen National Union (KNS, a Myanmar political organization that also has a military wing - note) wrested Miaowadi from the junta's control.

For days, the army forces, which received reinforcements, tried to re-enter the town, but were pushed back about 40 kilometers from the settlement, said KNS spokesman Sau Tau Ne, quoted by Reuters.

"It is not easy to come back here. They are facing a lot of difficulties," he said, adding that KNS forces were "blocking and crossing" the parts of the junta.
