The parliamentary elections in the Republic of the Maldives ended with a turnout of over 70%, the counting of votes began , the election commission of the country announced, TASS reported, quoted by BTA.

The polling stations have closed on time. According to the data, half an hour before the end of voting, more than 207,000 people participated in it. In total, almost 285,000 people are eligible to vote in the Maldives. Abroad, voting was organized in India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

As observers note, the elections were peaceful. In turn, the police announced the detention of three people in two polling stations. One of those detained in the capital Male has shown his ballot. Two others tried to fight and disrupt voting at a polling station on Fiori Island in Gaafu Daalu Atoll.

Today in the Maldives, elections were held for the People's Majlis (unicameral parliament). 368 candidates competed for 93 seats in the legislature. They were nominated by six parties and independent groups.
