Togo's ruling party wins parliamentary elections in a landslide - 1

Togo's ruling party wins parliamentary elections in a landslide, winning 108 of 113 seats in parliament, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA, citing the final unofficial results of the vote in the African country.

The agency notes that the overwhelming superiority of President Faure Gnassingbe's party - the "Union for the Republic" (UNIR, from French - Union pour la Republique), comes after the previous parliament approved a constitutional reform that changed the form of government from presidential to parliamentary.

Thus, Gnassingbe, who has ruled for 19 years, can remain in power, Reuters points out, recalling that the opposition parties that boycotted the previous elections were hoping for more seats in parliament.

The agency draws attention to the fact that the elections held now have been postponed twice as a result of opposition from the opposition, according to which the constitutional reform aims to keep the current president at the top of the state for life.
