The European Union wants to make major commitments to Ukraine's security in its defense against Russia by the beginning of July at the latest. They relate to political, military and economic assistance and are intended to apply until Ukraine joins the EU and NATO.
This is reported by the German newspaper WELT, which has obtained access to the document. It is currently marked “confidential“. Diplomats from the EU are discussing with Kiev what the security guarantees should be for the country, which was attacked by Vladimir Putin in 2022.
Member states have agreed on an eleven-page text classified as “confidential” which is currently being discussed between the European External Action Service and the government in Kyiv.
The European Union plays a key role in the immediate and long-term security and stability of Ukraine through military, civilian, humanitarian, financial, trade and economic assistance, the document says.
Brussels has promised Ukraine continued supplies of lethal and non-lethal weapons, continued training of soldiers, help with security sector reform, support for demining the country and cooperation in countering hybrid threats and cyber attacks. However, the EU clearly emphasizes that it will not send its soldiers to Ukraine against Russia.
