Ukraine evacuates over 4,000 people due to Russian offensive on Kharkiv - 1

Over 4,000 people have been evacuated from border areas of Ukraine's Kharkiv region, regional governor Oleg Sinegubov said today, quoted from France Press, BTA reported.

The need for the evacuations arose after Russian forces launched a new offensive against the Kharkiv region on Friday. "A total of 4,073 people have been evacuated," regional governor Oleg Sinegubov wrote on social media a day after the Russian Defense Ministry said Russian forces had captured five villages in the Kharkiv region.

Sinegubov reported that a 63-year-old man was killed today by an artillery shell in the village of Gliboke and that a 38-year-old man was wounded in the border town of Vovchansk.

Ukraine said on Friday that Russia had launched an attack on Kharkiv region and that it had made little progress in the border area from which its forces were pushed out nearly two years ago. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said yesterday evening that Ukrainian forces are carrying out counterattacks in the border villages of Kharkiv region. "Our number one task now is to thwart Russian plans for an offensive," the Ukrainian leader pointed out.
