Estonian government “seriously“ is discussing the possibility of sending military units to western Ukraine to allow Ukrainian forces stationed in that part of the country to be moved to the front lines. This was announced by Ukrinform, referring to the publication "Breaking Defense", which quotes Madis Rol, national security adviser to the Estonian president, writes BTA.
„The government of Estonia „seriously“ discusses the possibility of sending troops into western Ukraine to engage in indirect combat, in the “rear” of the Ukrainian forces, so that they are free to fight at the front”, the advisor explains.
The government is now analyzing this potential step and while Estonia prefers it to be part of a NATO mission to “demonstrate greater overall strength and resolve”, the possibility of Tallinn acting as part of a smaller coalition.
“Talks are ongoing”, Rolle said on May 10. “We will look at all possibilities. We shouldn't limit ourselves in terms of what we can do," he added.
Earlier this week, the head of the Estonian Defense Forces, Gen. Martin Herem said that a few months ago there were talks in the army about sending units to western Ukraine to be involved in the medical care, logistics and air defense of some cities in that part of the country.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron also did not rule out sending troops to Ukraine if Russia breaks through Ukrainian defenses and if Kiev sends a similar request.
