The German government described as wrong the adoption in Georgia of the controversial law limiting foreign influence on civil society and expressed hope that the government in Tbilisi will change its position, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
„We remind the Georgian government of its commitment from 2023 to unconditionally withdraw this law,” said Deputy Government Spokesman Wolfgang Buchner today in Berlin. “We share the concern that with this law the Georgian government is moving away from its course towards EU membership”, he added.
Georgia has been a candidate member of the EU since the end of last year. Despite weeks of mass protests, the ruling majority of the party "Georgian Dream" yesterday approved the controversial law that requires foreign-funded organizations to register as “foreign agents”.
Buchner stressed that the German government continues to support Georgia on its path to the European Union. “We are still taking this path as open. However, it is bound by very clear requirements that each applicant must fulfill. There will be no discounts on this route. It is up to Georgia to take this path, but it requires clear reforms and respect for common values, he added.
