Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring contacts between the Vatican and China and that it continues to support cooperation with the Holy See, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
Taipei added that China had "repeatedly violated" the 2018 agreement with the Vatican on the appointment of bishops.
The Vatican, which maintains official relations only with Taiwan, wants to open its permanent representation in China, the Vatican Secretary of State (Foreign Minister) Cardinal Pietro Parolin announced yesterday, which would mean raising bilateral relations to a qualitatively new level.
The Vatican is one of the few countries in the world that maintains formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which Beijing considers a Chinese territory, so Taipei is watching with concern Pope Francis' attempts to improve relations with China.
