The Romanian army sounds the alarm: Russia is preparing an escalation in the Balkans - 1

There is a risk of escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and Romania must be prepared. This was stated by the Chief of the General Staff of the Defense of Romania, General Vlad Georgica, at the opening of the "Black Sea Defense and Aerospace" exhibition. (BSDA) 2024 in Bucharest, Digi24 broadcasts. In the month of February, in an interview for “Free Europe” he urgently requested a law to prepare the population in case of war. Today, Georgitsa informed that a bill has already been submitted to the parliament and she hopes it will be adopted this year, BTA reported.

„I personally, not necessarily as a military man, believe that the Russian Federation will not stop there. If he wins in Ukraine, the main target will be the Republic of Moldova. We will witness tension in the Western Balkans. I am more than convinced that President Putin's policy will escalate in the near future," commented Vlad Georgitsa.

The reaction of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis was not long in coming. He assured that Romania is a safe country, that there is no direct threat to its security, nor a signal of danger of attacks, reports Digi24. The media quoted the head of state as saying that “Romania wins because it is in NATO - one of the most important security guarantees it has ever had”.

Earlier in the day, the chairman of the Senate and chairman of the National Liberal Party Nikolae Chuka also commented on the topic. He expressed the opinion that Romania cannot be intimidated from a security point of view, as it is part of the largest defense military alliance in the world, “of a very solid deterrence system".

“The fact that we are on the eastern flank of NATO forces us to be more vigilant in the medium and long term. We probably have to live for years with an aggressive Russia next door. We will continue to live with hybrid threats that will seek to weaken or reduce confidence in our forces and the partnerships we face with long-term challenges. It is not enough to invest only in defense, we must also strengthen Romanian democracy”, said Nicolae Chuca at the opening of the exhibition "Black Sea Defense and Aerospace" (BSDA) 2024 in Bucharest, quoted by Agerpress.

He called for more investment in defense and for updating the provisions of the National Defense Strategy on the directions of action and ways to ensure national security.
