The foreign ministers of Russia and Iran confirmed the strategic ties between the two countries after the death of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash about a week ago, DPA reported, referring to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, BTA reports.
Relations will be maintained, said the statement released after a telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iran's new Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Khani.
Khani's predecessor, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, also died in the helicopter crash along with Raisi on May 19.
All previous agreements and joint initiatives remain in force and will continue to operate, adds the Russian Foreign Ministry.
During Raisi's rule, Tehran took a hard line against the US and Europe, getting closer to Russia. For Moscow, Iran has become a key political, economic and military partner. Iran is an important supplier of weapons to Russia in the war in Ukraine, DPA notes.
