Estonian Prime Minister Kaia Kalas may become the new head of the EU's foreign policy department EU, writes "Politico", citing its sources.

European leaders have already pre-agreed on the candidacies of other EU leaders, with the publication's sources reporting that Ursula von der Leyen should remain at the helm of the European Commission for a second term, Portugal's Antonio Costa will become President of the European Council, and Roberta Mezzola will again be appointed President of the European Parliament.

All these decisions have not yet been finalised but an agreement on the EU leadership is expected to be reached by June 17, when an informal dinner of European leaders is scheduled.

According to Politico's sources, EU countries do not want to delay the process of approving the leadership amid the war in Ukraine and the possible return of former US President Donald Trump to the White House.

Four interlocutors of this media reported that so far the greatest ambiguity remains around the position of the head of the European foreign policy agency, that is, the employee who will replace Josep Borrell.

The publication calls Callas "an ideal choice" as a woman who is the leader of an Eastern European country and adheres to liberal values.

Prior to the recent European Parliament elections, some EU countries were not too keen on the prospect of her appointment because she was taking too hard a line on the Russian leadership. Some Western leaders feared that in this position she might focus too much on Russia and not pay enough attention to other regions, particularly the Middle East and Africa.

"That resistance has since faded, however, as Callas fits perfectly into the work schedule - geographically, politically and diplomatically," writes "Politico".

Kalas is one of Ukraine's staunchest supporters in opposing Russian aggression. Under her leadership, Estonia sent aid to Ukraine in the amount of about 1.6% of the country's GDP - according to this indicator, it remains in first place in the world.
