The Hamburg police neutralized an aggressive man with an ax. The incident happened near one of the main tourist streets of the city - Reeperbahn.
"According to initial data, one threatened the police with an ax and was carrying a Molotov cocktail. As a result, the police used firearms. The attacker was injured and is currently in hospital”, said a police statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
As the newspaper Bild initially wrote, the incident happened near a crowd of fans of the Dutch national team, who are playing today in Hamburg with Poland as part of The European Football Championship, which takes place in Germany. The tabloid pointed out that the man was carrying an axe. According to unconfirmed information, he was going to attack fans of the Dutch national team.
His motives and nationality remain unknown.
The newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost quoted an unnamed eyewitness. According to him, a man came out of the cafeteria with a pickaxe and shouted obscenities at the police. Their shots rang out the moment he put the pick down and tried to set the Molotov cocktail on fire.
