It's summer the travel season and many Europeans decide to travel around the continent by car. If you choose the right places to refuel, you can save a lot of money. Alexander Detev compared the average prices.

German public media ARD calculates that by filling up 50 liters of petrol, Germans can save 15 euros if they choose the most suitable neighboring country to fill up their car's tank.

For the Germans it is most profitable to load in Poland

In Germany, the average price for a liter of the most common gasoline in June is around 1.77 euros, and the average price for diesel is 1.66 euros. Gasoline in Poland is the cheapest among Germany's neighbors. There, gasoline is sold for 1.48 euros, and in the Czech Republic - for 1.53. In the case of diesel, the difference is also big - it is 18 cents cheaper in Poland and 21 cents in the Czech Republic. (At prices as of 6/20/2024)

The price of gasoline and diesel is significantly lower in both Hungary and Slovakia - respectively by about 32 and 24 cents for gasoline and 12 and 17 cents for diesel. Gasoline is also cheaper in Austria than in Germany - by as much as 22 cents.

In Slovenia and Croatia, gasoline costs 34 and 29 cents less, respectively, than in Germany. For diesel, the difference is 17 and 12 cents. Fuels are significantly more expensive in Switzerland, Italy, France and the Netherlands. Among Western countries, Luxembourg is an exception, where the price of gasoline is about 26 cents lower than in Germany, and diesel - by 16 cents.

The cheapest in the EU is in Bulgaria, the most expensive - in Denmark

In the north it becomes more expensive: in Denmark, a liter of gasoline is sold for 20 cents more than in Germany, and a liter of diesel - for about 8 cents. But Sweden is an exception. Diesel is also cheaper there than in Germany. At the moment, gasoline there is about 22 cents cheaper, and diesel - by seven cents.

According to the current data of a number of sites that compare fuel prices, within the EU, gasoline and diesel remain the cheapest in Bulgaria - about 1.33 euros per liter of gasoline and 1.31 per liter of diesel. In Greece, gasoline is more expensive than in Germany - 1.88 euros per liter, and diesel is cheaper - 1.62 euros. Gasoline in Greece is actually the most expensive in the EU after Denmark (€2.02 per liter) and the Netherlands (€1.99 per liter). Diesel is the most expensive in Belgium (1.74 euros) and Denmark (1.73).

The cheapest fuels in the Balkans are in Turkey

In Romania, the price per liter of diesel and gasoline is sold at the same price - 1.41 euros per liter. In North Macedonia, gasoline is 1 cent cheaper than in Bulgaria, and diesel - by 10.

In Serbia, it is more expensive - there, a liter of the most common gasoline costs about 1.6 euros, and a liter of diesel - about 1.7 euros. However, in the Balkans, the cheapest fuel is in Turkey - there a liter of gasoline costs 1.15 euros, and diesel is a cent more expensive.
