Analena Berbock: Despite limited budget, Germany must invest in security - 1

German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock said that the country should continue to make additional investments in the field of security. Despite facing considerable pressure to cut costs, Berbock's position, as reported by DPA, underscores the importance of continuing to strengthen Germany's security measures. This commitment to security, even in the face of difficult financial decisions, underscores Germany's commitment to maintaining and improving its defense capabilities, BTA reports.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the liberal, pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) wants the coalition government to stick to strict budget deficit rules known as the debt brake.

However, Berbock said today that Germany must take the lead in combating serious threats to European peace and security, even if it means taking on debt.

"It would be more than fatal if in a few years we have to say: We kept the debt brake, but we lost the peaceful European order," Berbock, who is from the Greens, said at an event organized by the Federal Academy for Security Policy in Berlin. "This will be the question our children will ask us in a few years," added the German foreign minister.

Berbock said he was irritated by the discussions "in which support for Ukraine is treated as a charitable gesture rather than what it actually is - an investment in (Germany's) national security.

"In truth, there could be no greater national interest" for us, she stressed.

Berbock criticized public debates in Germany, in which many people seem to want more security, but not to pay for it, quoted by BTA.
