Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei congratulated Massoud Pezeshkian, considered a moderate from a political point of view, about his victory in the country's presidential elections, DPA and TASS reported, quoted by BTA.
„I call on everyone to work together”, said Khamenei, who has the final say on all issues in the country. According to him, the rivalry demonstrated during the election campaign should be transformed into cooperation for the sake of the Islamic Republic.
„I advise the newly elected President Pezeshkian, trusting in the Almighty and continuing the path of the deceased President Raisi, to make maximum efforts to reveal the enormous potential of the country,” added Khamenei, whose words were quoted by his press service.
Pezeshkian won decisively in the second round of Iran's presidential election held yesterday, defeating the ultra-conservative Saeed Jalili.
The commander of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, also commented on the election. “We are fully prepared to continue and strengthen cooperation and interaction with the government,” he said in a statement.
The snap election was held following the death of previous president Ebrahim Raisi on May 19 in a helicopter crash in Iran's East Azerbaijan province. All the passengers on board died, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdolakhian.
