In Cyprus, the temperature records from June continue into July. The longest extreme heat warning issued in the country is in effect today – for 20 hours continuously. Frequent heat waves are expected on the island throughout the month, according to meteorologists.

A high temperature yellow code is in effect from 9pm last night until 5pm today, the Met Office has announced.

At night, the lowest temperature is 26 degrees, combined with high humidity, and during the day the mercury will reach 40 degrees.

Today is the first of at least three consecutive days of extreme heat. According to forecasters, 41 degrees are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Due to the unseasonably hot weather in June, the Met Office has issued 14 dangerous heat yellow codes, 4 orange and one time – red.

July temperatures in Cyprus will remain persistently high, 3 to 6 degrees above normal for this summer month, with prolonged and frequent heat waves, according to the medium-term forecast of the Advisory Group on Climate Monitoring of the World Meteorological Organization.
