Current 2024 could become hottest on record Since June 2023, every month has been the hottest on record in previous years, according to the program's monthly newsletter The European Union for Copernicus Earth Observation and Monitoring (C3S), reports Reuters

According to the latest data, 2024 could surpass the previous one as the hottest year on record. Scientists say that human-caused climate change and the natural weather phenomenon "El Nino” have pushed temperatures to record highs this year.

"There is about a 95% chance that 2024 will surpass 2023 as the warmest year since global surface temperatures began to be recorded in the mid-1800s,”, emphasizes researcher Zeke Hausfater.

More than 1,000 people died from extreme heat during the pilgrimage to Mecca last month. Deaths were recorded in New Delhi, India, where an unprecedentedly long heat wave occurred, and in Greece, the agency recalled.

Greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are the main cause of climate change, the media claim.

Despite promises to fight global warming, countries have so far failed to collectively reduce these emissions, leading to a steady rise in temperatures.

Over the past 12 months, the world's average temperature was the warmest on record for such a period. It was 1.64 degrees higher than the average temperature in the pre-industrial period between 1850 and 1900.
