The White House yesterday accused Iran of trying to take advantage of the protests in the US related to the conflict in the Gaza Strip, Reuters reported , BTA reported.
After a senior US intelligence official said Iran was trying to sow discord in American society, the White House said Tehran's behavior was unacceptable.
According to US National Intelligence Director Avril Haynes, individuals linked to the Iranian government posed as activists online, encouraged protests related to the Gaza conflict, and provided financial support to demonstrators.
"Americans of various political persuasions express their views in good faith regarding the conflict in Gaza. "The freedom to peacefully express different views is key to our democracy," White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said at a briefing.
"At the same time, the US government has an obligation to warn Americans about malign foreign influences. . .We will continue to denounce attempts to undermine our democracy", Jean-Pierre also said.
So far, there is no comment from Tehran on this matter, Reuters notes.
