Ukraine fights Russia with toy drones and duct-taped bombs, writes Bloomberg.
There are many drone manufacturers in Ukraine who transfer them to the front of their military. These drones cost about 400-500 dollars (800-900 BGN) and are capable of destroying expensive Russian equipment. The cheap, domestically produced flying arsenal has changed the economics of war, the US agency writes.
"Virius Dron" produces the so-called first person drones. It has four propellers and a camera that can wirelessly transmit real-time flight footage to the pilot. The pilot works with a remote control similar to a video game joystick. Drones were originally used in racing events until someone realized they could be attached to a tape bomb. Traveling at speeds of up to 160 km/h, an FPV drone can be equipped with explosives powerful enough to disable an armored vehicle. Three such drones can destroy a tank," the article states.
Thousands of Ukraine's deadliest weapons were manufactured on the top three floors of an apartment building in Kyiv. The room, which used to be the office of an IT company, has workstations cluttered with quadcopters in various stages of assembly, accompanied by piles of electronic components and circuit boards strewn across the worktops. "This was the cheapest place we could find," said Oleksiy Babenko, founder and CEO of "Viry Drone".
The only reason Babenko gave Bloomberg Businessweek access to the facility that produces more than 6,000 exploding drones a month is because his company is about to move into a larger facility that will triple its capacity. The threat of becoming a target for Russian cruise missiles has most Ukrainian drone manufacturers moving to safer locations.
