Last night, Kim visited memorials honoring veterans of the 1950-53 war, including the Tower of Friendship in memory of Chinese People's Liberation Army soldiers who fought alongside the North Koreans, the state news agency KCTA reported.
On July 27, 1953, North Korea signed an armistice agreement with the United States and China, ending the fighting in the three-year war. US generals sign the agreement, representing UN forces supporting South Korea.
"Comrade Kim Jong-un stated that it is the sacred mission and duty of our generation to protect the ideology and system defended with blood by the previous generation of war victors ... and to build a paradise for the people,", KCTA reported. .
North Korea calls July 27 "Victory Day," even though the armistice demarcated a border dividing the Korean peninsula into two roughly equal parts and restored the balance between the two sides, which achieved victories but also suffered defeats during the war, Reuters points out.
South Korea does not mark this day with official events.
Celebrations are being held across North Korea to mark the day, including banquets, a revolutionary youth vanguard parade and mass dances in Pyongyang's central square attended by patriots under holiday fireworks, the KCTA said.
