Record heat! Water levels in Istanbul's dams have dropped by half - 1

The July heat, which hit Istanbul earlier than usual, caused a significant drop in the levels of the dams that supply the 16 million-strong metropolis and the Marmara region with water, writes BTA.

The Water and Sewerage Directorate of the Greater Istanbul Municipality (ISKI) reported that in the last two weeks, the dams' capacity has fallen below 60 percent.

Yesterday, an average of 57.94 percent filling of the dams was measured, the website of the Directorate states, specifying that in previous months it was 83 percent.

In the Alibey dam, the level has dropped to 26.3 percent.

For now there is no risk of water regime because there are dams like Terkos where the capacity is 71.39 percent.

But if it doesn't rain soon, the levels will drop even more, the website warns.

There are a total of 10 dams that supply the metropolis of Istanbul and the Marmara region with water.
