Nigerian police arrested dozens of protesters and used tear gas to disperse demonstrators who targeted government offices in the capital Abuja on the third a day of protests against the rising cost of living, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

In the northern state of Kano, at least one person was shot and taken to hospital, witnesses said.

At least 13 people were killed on Thursday when protests turned violent, the human rights group Amnesty International said. The organization accused law enforcement of using live ammunition.

Police said a total of seven people had died during the three days of protests, but denied responsibility. Nearly 700 people were arrested and nine police officers were injured, the police statement added.

Law enforcement is trying to contain the protests on the outskirts of major cities to avoid disruption to business and traffic.

On Saturday, demonstrators gathered at a large stadium in Abuja, but police used tear gas to disperse them when they tried to cross a main road in the city center.

„A lot of Nigerians are feeling the same pain, so I believe they will come out and protest. I will be here until midnight,'' one of the participants in today's protest told Reuters before the police fired tear gas. Dozens of protesters were arrested and taken away in police vans.

The police and army have stepped up patrols in Kano state, where some of the demonstrators tried to storm a police station.

In Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, more than 1,000 protesters gathered peacefully to denounce the economic hardships exacerbated by President Bola Tinubu's reforms. The first measures came into effect last year, one of which was the removal of the gasoline subsidy.
