Japan today suspended hundreds of flights and advised nearly 10,000 households in some areas around Tokyo to evacuate after a strong typhoon caused power outages, reported Reuters, BTA reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (YAMA) categorized the typhoon as "very strong" yesterday at 08:50 local time (23:50 GMT), while "Ampil" was passing along the Pacific coast of the main Japanese island of Honshu.

Expected this afternoon "Ampil" to target the eastern Kanto region, where the capital Tokyo is also located. JAMA reported that the wind speed reached a maximum gust of 60 meters per second.

The weather service warned that strong winds are expected in Kanto, creating the risk of accidents with flying debris and could even overturn moving vehicles. The city of Mobara in Chiba Prefecture issued an evacuation order for about 18,500 residents, and dozens of cities opened special shelter centers and recommended voluntary evacuation.

More than 2,000 households in Kanto were affected by a power outage this morning. Electricity was later restored in some areas. 281 domestic and 38 international flights have been cancelled, and this measure will affect around 50,000 passengers.
