Vladimir Putin: Ukraine Tried to Strike Kursk Nuclear Power Plant - 1

President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of trying to hit Russia's Kursk nuclear power plant in an attack last night and added that Moscow had informed the UN nuclear safety agency about the situation, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

Putin, who did not provide further details on the case or provide documentary evidence to support his claim, said this at a meeting with high-ranking officials regarding the situation in the border areas.

"The enemy tried to strike the nuclear power plant that night. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been notified, from there they promised to come and send specialists to assess the situation. I hope this will really be done on their part," Putin said, quoted by TASS.

For now there is no comment from Ukraine.

On August 6, Kiev launched a surprise invasion of Russia's western borders with the participation of thousands of troops. Moscow was apparently caught off guard, and the invasion was the largest by a foreign power against Russia since World War II, Reuters notes.

At the meeting with Putin, which took place in a teleconference format, Alexei Smirnov, acting governor of the Kursk region, reported to the president that the situation at the Kursk NPP is stable.

Smirnov added that 133,190 people have left the area or been evacuated.

Another governor, that of Bryansk Oblast, Alexander Bogomaz, reported to the president that border guard forces had repelled an attempt by a Ukrainian subversive intelligence group to infiltrate the region.
