The price of coffee in Greece is rising sharply both in shops and in restaurants. Cafe owners expect an influx of customers, BNR reported.
The wholesale price of coffee has risen by between 45 and 65%, Greek state television ERT reports. This is expected to lead to a sharp increase in the price of all types of coffee in stores, as well as at least 50 percent higher prices in cafes.
On the shelves, the price of espresso capsules may increase from 6 to 7 euros, and on the package of Greek ground coffee - from 5 to 6 euros. Cafe owners report that they can no longer maintain the previous prices because the tax on a cup of coffee is 24% again, and to this comes the markup due to the appreciation of the stock exchanges. For now, the prices for coffee in a cardboard or plastic cup are lower, which will empty the establishments, the owners believe.
According to state television, the high price of coffee is a consequence of both the dry weather and speculation on the part of traders.
