Russia "exchanges“ Kursk Oblast for the opportunity to take over the city of Pokrovsk located in Donetsk Oblast, noted the editors of the American magazine Forbes.
According to the publication, Moscow has "abandoned its troops on the Eastern Front” and sends "young and poorly trained conscripts” in the Kursk region.
"Essentially, Russia is trading Kursk for part of eastern Ukraine. And Ukraine is exchanging part of its east for Kursk. Whether any compromise is worth it is a political question that does not have an easy answer for either side”, notes the publication.
Now Russian troops continue to advance in the Pokrovsk region - on Friday, their infantry entered Novogradovka and even disabled a Ukrainian tank with a grenade launcher. Pokrovsk is located near the main Ukrainian supply routes west of Donetsk.
Even the elite 47th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with two dozen surviving M-1 Abrams tanks was unable to stop the enemy advance. According to the Conflict Intelligence Team, if there is hope for the Ukrainian defenders of the city, it lies in the significant Russian losses that are beginning to weigh.
"On the Pokrov direction, the enemy is beginning to experience a lack of resources. The number of the previous directions decreased from seven to three in two weeks,” notes the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies.
However, even a slow advance is dangerous as the front line approaches Pokrovsk. The publication believes that if this leads to a wider collapse of Ukrainian defenses in the east, Kiev may regret the start of the Kursk operation.
