Left party "Rebellious France" began the procedure to remove the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron from power. The head of the party's parliamentary faction Matilda Pano announced this on X (formerly Twitter).
"The draft decision on the impeachment of the President of the Republic in accordance with Article 68 of the Constitution has been sent to the deputies for signature, she said. “Macron does not want to obey the choice made by the voters and entrust the formation of a government to the left, so we must remove him.“
On August 26, Macron rejected a proposal by the leftist New Popular Front alliance, which includes France Insubordinate, to appoint economist Lucie Castet as head of government. The next day, the French president began a new round of consultations on the prime minister's candidacy, excluding the left-wing and right-wing National Union among his interlocutors.
Article 68 of the constitution provides for early termination of the powers of the President of France in case of non-fulfilment of his duties. This also applies to the refusal to approve laws passed by Parliament. At the first stage, the initiators of the impeachment must collect the signatures of 58 deputies (one tenth of the composition of the lower house). The House Bureau must then determine whether the draft resolution can be accepted for consideration. The project must then be approved by the relevant committee. Two-thirds of the people's representatives in the National Assembly must vote for the adoption of the decision. The bill is then submitted to the Senate (upper house) of Parliament. If both chambers support the document, MPs and senators must meet in a joint session. For impeachment, the resolution must be supported by at least 617 of the 925 members of both houses.
In the early elections for the French Parliament, the "New Popular Front" received 182 seats out of 577 in the National Assembly (lower house of parliament) of France. The "Together for the Republic" presidential coalition, which already has 168 seats in the Bourbon Palace, finished second. Right-wing party "National Unification" with allies from the Republican Party received 143 seats. For an absolute majority in the chamber, a party must have 289 seats. To date, France has set a record for the longest tenure of a government after resignation. Macron dismissed Prime Minister Gabriel Atal's government on the condition that ministers continue to serve until a new cabinet is formed.
