The Leader of the Israeli opposition Yair Lapid called for the conclusion of an agreement with "Hamas" that would end the war in the Gaza Strip and lead to the release of the hostages still in the hands of the Palestinian group, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
"Ending the war is in Israel's interest," Lapid wrote in Hebrew in Ex. He also issued a new call for a change in Israel's political leadership, saying that "The war will continue as long as this government exists.
The government does not want peace, stressed the former prime minister and head of the centrist Yesh Atid party. ("There is a future").
Internal Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir of the far-right party "Otsma Yehudite" ("Jewish Power") said earlier that it was working to end the current indirect negotiations with Hamas for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. Israel should not negotiate with murderers, he believes.
Over the weekend, the Israel Defense Forces announced that they had recovered the bodies of six hostages, sparking an outpouring of grief and anger in Israel. According to media reports, the hostages were shot at close range between 48 and 72 hours before their bodies were discovered.
The news led to street protests involving hundreds of thousands of people. They demanded a deal that would secure the release of the remaining hostages. New demonstrations are planned for today.
Relatives of the hostages have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government of sabotaging attempts to broker a deal by the US, Egypt and Qatar.
