German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier today called on the political forces to find a compromise during the cross-party talks on the issue of migration, which will be held next week, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Steinmeier, who does not have much power, said in Berlin that he was monitoring the government's consultations with the conservative opposition and that he expected them to reach an understanding.
I am convinced that the parties of the democratic center are the ones who should find solutions to the issues that worry many people, Steinmeier pointed out.
The cross-party talks were organized after the deadly melee attack in the western German city of Solingen on August 23, which was carried out by a 26-year-old Syrian man.
Steinmeier previously said that Germany must find a solution to the problem of illegal migration.
"We must make every possible effort to implement the access restriction rules that already exist and those that are currently being created as a supplement," said the German president.
In regional elections in two German states that have been held since the attack in Solingen, parties with anti-immigrant messages have received strong voter support.
