The Republic of North Macedonia celebrates its national holiday - Independence Day, dariknews.bg reported.

The celebrations started already yesterday, when the state award "September 8" was presented in the parliament of the country. of Taekwondo coach Borche Kostovski, under whose leadership Deyan Georgievski won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and last night in the barracks “Ilinden” in Skopje, the holiday was celebrated with an honorary artillery fire.

Today, the government of the Republic of North Macedonia organized a festive program under the motto “ Together we fight, together we will succeed!“. The main event will be held in the afternoon at the Philharmonic building in Skopje, where a specially prepared film will be shown, which includes archival material from the 1991 referendum in which the country declared independence.

The referendum for the declaration of independence of the country, which until then was within the borders of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), was held on September 8, 1991. With a voter turnout of 75.7 percent and the approval of 96.4 percent of those who voted, the parliament declared independence with a decision of November 17, 1991 and began the process of secession from the federation.

Bulgaria was the first country that on January 15, 1992 recognized the new country under the name of the Republic of Macedonia.
