Closed! Germany to introduce controls at all its land borders - 1

German Interior Minister Nancy Feiser will announce a temporary border controls at all of Germany's land borders to tackle illegal migration and protect society from Islamist extremism, a government source told Reuters. on Monday.

The control will begin on September 16 and will initially last six months, the DPA agency reported, citing government sources.

The German government is consulting with the main opposition CDU party on ways to limit migration in the face of public concern and following the deadly knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker last month in the city of Solingen.

Last week, the anti-immigration party "AzG" won provincial elections in Brandenburg and came second in Saxony.

Feiser's Social Democrats face a state election in Brandenburg in two weeks, where the party rules in coalition with the Greens and the Christian Democrats.

Germany shares its more than 3,700 km long land border with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Austria's Foreign Minister Gerhard Karner told the Bild newspaper on Monday that his country would not accept any migrants turned back by Germany at the border.

"There is no room for maneuver there," he said.

"This is the law. I have ordered the federal police chief not to allow any returns," he added.

Last year, Germany announced tighter controls at its land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland in response to a sharp increase in first-time asylum applications.
