Iranian authorities have released Austrian citizen Christian Weber, detained for crimes committed in Iran's West Azerbaijan province, and handed him over to the Austrian ambassador in Tehran, the Iranian news agency "Mizan" reported today, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.
Austria reported in 2022 that its citizen had been detained in Iran on charges related to the protests that erupted there after the death of Mahsa Amini.
"Mizan" indicated that the Austrian citizen was released as a gesture of Islamic mercy. He was handed over to his country's ambassador, who is expected to organize his departure. The agency did not specify the reason for Weber's detention.
In September 2022, the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was alleged to have violated Iran's Islamic dress code, led to months of protests and became the biggest challenge to the Islamic Republic's spiritual leaders in decades.
