US General: Ukrainian F-16s are no match for Russian fighters - 1

The older F-16 models that Ukraine receives from its allies are no match for the modern Russian aircraft. This is what retired US Major General Gordon “Skip“ told Business Insider. Davis.

Davis said that Ukraine's F-16s are already making a difference, and with the delivery of more aircraft, Ukraine will be able to further strengthen its position. About 20 F-16s are expected to be received by the end of the year. However, he noted that these aircraft have certain limitations in range and vulnerability.

Modern Russian aircraft such as the Su-35S, Su-30SM and MiG-31 have more powerful radars and missiles, especially the R-37M air-to-air missiles, which have a range superior to the Ukrainian AIM-120. This poses a threat to Ukrainian F-16s, especially in combination with Russian air defense systems.

Ukrainian F-16s, although they have received some upgraded systems, are still older compared to those used in other countries. Many of them already have decades of flying experience, making them less reliable. Although the planes are equipped with advanced electronic warfare capabilities, they still remain vulnerable to Russian ground defenses and aircraft.

Given the nature of warfare, aircraft cannot always be used effectively due to active air defense systems on both sides, limiting air combat options. Although Russia is keeping its modern aircraft from intensive use for now, the situation could change at any moment.

Ukrainian F-16 capacity remains limited for now due to the small number of aircraft and slow deliveries. Ukraine's allies, including Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands, have pledged more than 85 aircraft, but that is not enough to achieve air superiority. Despite its limitations, the F-16 will help Ukraine defend itself against drone and missile attacks and provide a first step toward strengthening its air force in the long term.
