Typhoon “Kraton” today it reached land in the southern part of Taiwan, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
The area was cordoned off for two days before the arrival of the powerful tropical cyclone, which has already killed two people and injured more than 100.
The disaster was preceded by strong winds of 126 km/h and gusts of up to 162 km/h, as well as heavy rain.
“Typhoon “Kraton“ made landfall near a neighborhood in Kaohsiung at around 12:40 a.m. today (04:40 GMT) in the southern part of the island”, Taiwan's Central Weather Service said.
Schools and offices on the island have remained closed since yesterday, and residents of the southern port city of Kaohsiung have been advised to take shelter.
„There will be damaging winds in this area. Seek shelter as soon as possible”, meteorologists warned today in messages sent to the mobile phones of local residents.
The element has already brought heavy rains and strong winds to the island. Authorities reported two deaths in incidents caused by the bad weather; two people are missing, and over 100 are injured.
On Tuesday, a 70-year-old man fell from a tree in eastern Taiwan and died in hospital the next day. Another man, 66, who was admitted to hospital in the south-east of the country on Monday after his truck crashed into a rock that had fallen on the road, also died yesterday.
„Kraton“ disrupted air traffic, due to which all domestic flights were suspended today for the second day in a row.
According to the authorities, the typhoon caused temporary power outages in nearly 55,000 homes.
