China accuses Taiwan's president of trying to escalate tensions - 1

Taiwanese President William Lai is escalating tensions and has “sinister intentions”, China said government, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

Lai, who took office in May after winning elections in January, is loathed by China, which calls him a “separatist”. Beijing claims that democratically governed Taiwan is its territory, which Lai and his government reject.

In response to Lai's comments over the weekend about it being “impossible” For the People's Republic of China to become Taiwan's homeland, since Taiwan has older political roots, the Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office said that he is confusing right and wrong.

Lai continues to spread the theory that there are two separate countries on either side of the Taiwan Strait, the statement said.

„Lai's delusion about Taiwan independence (...) once again reveals his stubborn stance on Taiwan independence and his sinister intentions to intensify hostility and confrontation,” the service added.
