Emmanuel Todd: NATO will collapse if Ukraine loses the war - 1

NATO will "collapse" if Ukraine loses the war is against Russia, says the French historian and intellectual Emmanuel Tod. In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere di Bologna this week on the occasion of the release of the Italian translation of his book "Defeat for the West" Todd said that if Russia is defeated in Ukraine, European subjugation to the Americans will last a century, but if the US-backed Ukrainian effort fails, "NATO will collapse and Europe will remain free." The book caused a series of criticisms against the French anthropologist, accused for a decade of pro-Putin positions.

CORRIERE DI BOLOGNA: Professor Todd, in France they write that you want to "make your dreams come true" and that what you say has no scientific basis. How do you answer that?

EMMANUEL TODD: The question is not to know what the French press writes about me, but to know the facts that the current story reveals. The fact is that the United States has not been able to produce the military equipment that the Ukrainians need because the power of its industry has been exhausted by financialization. The fact is that the Ukrainian army is retreating and having difficulty recruiting soldiers. The fact is that Western economic sanctions have done more damage to the European economy than to the Russian economy. And it is also a fact that the political stability of France is more threatened today than that of Russia. The restructuring of the Russian economy was made possible by the fact that that country produced more engineers than the United States and by the fact that countries that were neither allies nor subjects of the United States continued to trade with Russia. The comments of a large part of the French press about my dreams - "Le Monde", "Libération", "L"Express" etc. - suggest that she lives in a dream. The success of my book in France also suggests that this press is not always taken seriously by the French.

CB: However, the book is based on your theories about nihilism and religious decline in Europe. Can you tell us exactly what they mean?

Well. TODD: The last vestiges of the social and moral system of religious origin have disappeared. The zero state of religion has been reached. However, the absence of beliefs, norms and character or religious habits leaves the feeling that you are a mortal who does not know what he is doing on earth. The most banal response to this emptiness is the deification of emptiness: a nihilism that leads to the impulse to destroy things, people, and reality. To me, a central symptom of this is the transgender ideology that makes our upper middle class want to believe that a man can become a woman and a woman a man. This is a false statement. The biology of the genetic code tells us this is impossible. I speak here as an anthropologist, as a scientist, not as a moralist. We need to protect people who think they are a different gender than their biological sex. As for the LGB part of LGBT ideology (Lesbianism, Male Homosexuality and Bisexuality), I bless sexual preferences. It is also surprising, but important, that in recognizing the solidity of the genetic code today, science and the Church are on the same side - against the nihilistic affirmation of the lie.

CB: You argue that Europe has delegated representation of the West to the United States and is now paying the consequences. How do you think this trend can be changed?

Well. TODD: There's nothing else we can do right now. The war has already begun. The outcome of this war will decide the fate of Europe. If Russia is defeated in Ukraine, European subjugation to the Americans will last a century. If, as I believe, the United States is defeated, NATO will collapse and Europe will remain free. Even more important than the Russian victory will be the stopping of the Russian army on the Dnieper and the reluctance of the Putin regime to attack Western Europe militarily. With 144 million inhabitants, a shrinking population and 17 million square kilometers, the Russian state is already struggling to hold onto its territory. Russia will have neither the means nor the will to expand once the borders of pre-communist Russia are restored. Western Russophobic hysteria, fantasizing about the desire for Russian expansion in Europe, is simply ridiculous to a serious historian. The psychological shock that awaits Europeans will be to understand that NATO does not exist to protect us, but to control us.

CB: Do you think that Europe took the last step towards this subjugation during the conflicts in the Balkans and in particular on the issue of Kosovo?

Well. TODD: No, it all started in Ukraine. During the Iraq war, after Kosovo, Putin, Schröder and Chirac gave joint press conferences. This horrified Washington. It looked like America was about to be kicked out of the European continent. Therefore, the separation of Russia from Germany became a priority for American strategists. The deteriorating situation in Ukraine served this purpose. Forcing the Russians to go to war to prevent Ukraine's de facto integration into NATO was initially a major diplomatic success for Washington. The shock of the war paralyzed Germany and allowed the Americans, in general confusion, to blow up the Nordstream gas pipeline, a symbol of the economic agreement between Germany and Russia. Obviously, in the second phase, that of American defeat, American control over Europe will be destroyed. Germany and Russia will meet again. This conflict is in a sense artificial. What is natural in a Europe with a low birth rate and an aging population is the complementarity between German industry and Russian energy and mineral resources.
