The Ukrainian army gets an advantage in their positions on the battlefield thanks to Soviet agricultural planning. One of these elements is the forest belts, writes The Washington Post.
Soldiers of the Ukrainian armed forces, who are on the frontline in the Donetsk region, told reporters that control of strategic forest strips can be decisive for victory or defeat in battle.
"The tree line is life," says Alexander, a member of the National Guard's 15th Brigade Artillery Team.
The publication recalls that the protective belts are trees planted decades ago throughout Eastern and Southern Ukraine. They are designed to stabilize adjacent fields and help reduce soil erosion by wind.
A Ukrainian shooter named Maxim says the best forest belts have a hill. Hilltops provide a stronger radio signal for drones and help infantry to fire on enemy troops below.
According to Maxim, the forest strips have become one of the most valuable elements of the relief. He emphasized that they should regularly fight for such positions with Russian troops:
"This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The enemy uses them in the same way“.
The director of the Institute of Biomedical Technologies of the Ukrainian University, Valentina Movchan, said that the active planting of belts began during the reign of Joseph Stalin.
