In an address on Friday evening, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that those responsible for the tragedy at the train station in the city of Novi Sad will be held accountable, TV En 1 reported, quoted by BTA.
At least 14 people died when a roof structure collapsed at the station yesterday, according to the data released last night by the prosecutor's office in Novi Sad. Among the dead was a six-year-old child.
„I can assure you that those responsible will be punished,” Vucic said in a live statement on Serbian state TV RTS from Novi Sad.
„As president, I demand that the prosecutor's office investigate and punish the people responsible for this,”, the Serbian president said, adding that he wanted both political and criminal responsibility. According to Vucic, the fault lies with the persons who are responsible for the infrastructure.
He confirmed the number of dead and that a citizen of North Macedonia was also identified among them.
Vucic also called for unity and support for the families of the victims of the tragedy and praised the rescue teams and construction workers, who used heavy equipment to remove the rubble under which the people were.
Today in Serbia, a day of national mourning has been declared in honor of the victims of the tragedy.
