„US elections will not affect Iranians' livelihoods the Iranians,“ said the spokesman of the Iranian government, Fatemeh Mohajerani, after Donald Trump announced victory in the presidential elections, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Representatives of Western and Arab countries commented to Reuters that Trump could once again implement his “maximum pressure policy”, tightening sanctions against Iran's oil industry. In addition, Trump could authorize Israel to strike Iran's nuclear facilities and carry out “targeted killings” in the Islamic Republic.
„The US election is none of our business. Our policies are stable and do not change depending on individuals. We have already made the necessary forecasts and there will be no change in people's livelihoods,” noted Mohajerani.
During his first term, Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with world powers that curbed Iran's nuclear program in exchange for economic relief. In 2018, Washington imposed new sanctions that severely affected Iran's oil exports, reduced government revenues and forced the Iranian government to take unpopular measures such as raising taxes and running large budget deficits.
Iran's national currency weakened, with its free market rate hitting a historic low of 700,000 rials per US dollar, Reuters notes.
