Three members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were killed in a strike by a Turkish drone in northern Iraq last night. This was announced today by the counter-terrorism service of the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan in northern Iraq, quoted by Reuters.
The Turkish strike was aimed at a car in a mountainous area near the northern Iraqi province of Dohuk, killing three people, including a person identified in the statement by the anti-terrorist forces of Iraqi Kurdistan as a "senior representative of the PKK", BTA said.
Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes against PKK fighters in northern Iraq and has dozens of bases on Iraqi territory.
The PKK has waged an armed struggle against the Turkish state since 1984 and is considered a terrorist organization by Ankara, the EU, the US and Australia. Tens of thousands have died in the conflict.
The original goal of the PKK was to create an independent Kurdish state. Subsequently, the PKK softened its demands and insisted on greater rights for the Kurds and limited autonomy in southeastern Turkey, notes Reuters.
