Germany must "do everything" to maintain its good relations with the USA and after the election of Donald Trump as the next American president, which are "the basis for success", said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, quoted by France Press.
The German leader emphasized that he had a "good conversation" with Trump after his victory in the presidential election.
"We must continue to do everything so that these relations can develop well in the coming decades, regardless of what the government will be here or there,", he emphasized to the Bundestag.
However, he stressed that Germany should not become polarized to the same extent that the US is already politicized, Reuters notes. To avoid this, the opposition must support key legislative measures, Scholz said a week after his government lost its majority.
"There is no democracy without compromises", the chancellor emphasized in his speech to the lower house of the German parliament.
He also called for an increase in child benefit and tackling the negative effect of rising consumption taxes. Germans are not obliged to choose between prosperity and security, the chancellor stressed.
Europe has obligations to Ukraine, but aid funds must not lead to cuts in pensions or benefits. "Let's work together for the good of the country until the next elections," urged Scholz.
Ukraine can "rely on our country and our solidarity," the chancellor emphasized.
