India-China relations have repeatedly been tested by one fundamental question: Where does our land begin and where does yours end? Border disputes between the two nuclear powers have repeatedly led to armed clashes between them.
Now a show on the Indian news channel NDTV has inflamed the country. The engo explained how India is losing land to China due to the movement of tectonic plates in that region of the world.
What are tectonic plates?
The Earth's crust is like a puzzle made up of many parts: There are several giant oceanic plates and many smaller continental plates (of the Earth's crust). However, scientists do not agree on the exact number of the smaller plates. They “swim“ in the Earth's inner molten mantle. As magma from the planet's core erupts upward through fissures, the plates shift—often by a few centimeters a year.
This natural phenomenon has been happening for billions of years and is actually completely normal. The plates either move apart, rub against each other, or slide under each other. As a result, the continents also move by virtue of the so-called plate tectonics.
