Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country needs more air defense to defend itself against incessant Russian attacks, writes The Guardian, citing a statement from the Ukrainian Head of State in the Telegram app.
He points out that over the past week, Russia has used more than 800 guided aerial bombs, about 460 combat drones and more than 20 missiles of various types.
"During this week, an air alert has been declared almost every day throughout Ukraine. Ukraine is not a weapons testing ground and is a sovereign and independent country. But Russia still continues its efforts to kill our people, spread fear and panic, and weaken us," the Ukrainian president emphasized.
Overnight, Ukrainian air defense forces said they shot down 50 of 73 Russian drones fired at the country. The Ukrainian military said it destroyed more than 10 Russian drones that were targeted at Kiev in the attack.
Zelensky has instructed Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to start talks with partners about acquiring modern air defense systems. This was reportedly in response to Russia firing an experimental intermediate-range ballistic missile at a missile factory in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro a week ago.
