The authorities of the Dominican Republic announced last night that they seized nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine, the largest drug seizure in the country's history, the Associated Press reported, cited by BTA.
Drugs worth 250 mln. dollars were found in a shipment of bananas that arrived at the port of Caucedo near the capital Santo Domingo. The shipment was sent from Guatemala and was supposed to reach Belgium, said Carlos Devers, spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Agency of the Dominican Republic.
Ten suspects have been detained, he added during a press conference.
Since the beginning of the year, the authorities of the country, which is considered an important transit point for the world's drug trafficking, have confiscated nearly 47 tons of drugs.
