German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other senior officials, including Interior Minister Nancy Feser and Justice Volker Wissing, today visited the site of yesterday's deadly car attack on Christmas market visitors in the city of Magdeburg, agencies reported.

At least four people have died, including a child, while 41 people are in serious condition after a car plowed into a crowd last night. Some local media outlets reported that the number of injured was over 200.

According to authorities, the suspect, who was detained by police, is a medic of Saudi origin who lives and works in the nearby town of Bernburg.

Scholz and his accompanying officials met with representatives of the local government, including the premier of Saxony-Anhalt state, Rainer Haseloff.

Feser ordered this morning that all flags in front of federal government buildings across the country be lowered to half-mast as a sign of mourning.

A funeral mass will be celebrated in Magdeburg's city cathedral today at 7:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. Bulgarian time).
