The military government of Myanmar will release 5864 prisoners, including 180 foreigners, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA, citing state media.
The amnesty is on the occasion of the celebration of the Independence Day of the country in Southeast Asia.
Myanmar has been gripped by unrest since early 2021, when the military overthrew the elected civilian government and brutally suppressed pro-democracy protests, sparking an armed rebellion across the country.
The junta has said it will hold elections this year, but the plan has been widely criticized by opposition groups as fake.
