German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on “all countries, whether in the East or the West“ to respect international borders and stressed that “no country is another's backyard“, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
“The principle of the inviolability of borders applies to all countries, whether they are in the East or the West, whether they are a small country or a very large and very powerful country“, Scholz said at the congress of his German Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Berlin, a few days before Donald Trump takes office as US president.
The German chancellor directly warned the Republican billionaire earlier this week about his threats regarding Greenland, Panama and Canada.
Sholz's hint today about Trump's expansionist goals was clear, although he did not mention the future US president by name. He also condemned “Russia's ruthless aggressive war“ against Ukraine.
“The inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law. No country is another country's backyard. No small country should be afraid of its big neighbors. This is the basis of what we call Western values,“ the German leader said during the SPD congress in Berlin, organized ahead of the parliamentary elections on February 23.
