German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed hope that the Ukrainian conflict will end this year, the DPA agency reported.
“It is now necessary to explore all options to stop the killings and achieve peace“, the head of government said at an election event of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in Wolfsburg.
“I hope that everything will work out this year, but we will see whether it is possible“, he said. At the same time, Scholz insisted that a solution should not be found bypassing the Ukrainians and the Europeans.
His speech was interrupted by individual activists who chanted "Free Palestine". They were escorted out of the hall, the chancellor did not react. The event in Wolfsburg was one of four major rallies during the SPD election campaign. The party deliberately chose this city, where the Volkswagen automobile concern is located, which plans to cut 35,000 jobs.
Securing jobs in industry is a key issue for the Social Democrats during the current election campaign.
