The man who repeatedly burned Qurans during protests in Sweden in 2023 was shot dead in the city of Södertälje. Local media reported the incident on Thursday, and a murder investigation was immediately launched by police, quoted by News.bg.
In August 2023, Salvan Momica and his co-protester, Salvan Najem, were charged with "agitation against an ethnic group" after several incidents of desecration of Qurans, including public burning. They also made derogatory remarks about Muslims. The actions sparked protests across the Middle East, including attacks on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.
Swedish authorities condemned the acts of desecration, but stressed that they were protected by constitutional rights to freedom of speech. However, the prosecutor's office pointed out that in certain cases, burning the Koran could be considered "agitation against an ethnic group".
